Land Rover Range Rover Sport is available as the HSE
17th July 2009
Supercharged ($71,250). The HSE is powered by a 4.4 liter V8 with 300 horsepower while the Supercharged has a 4.2 liter V8 with 390 horsepower. Both are configured with automatic transmissions with six speeds. The models include all-wheel drive, brakes with anti-locking technology suitable for all terrains, and systems for control of traction, terrain response, and suspension. The standard protective airbag array includes six units strategically placed to protect the driver and occupants.
The standard audio system has 550-watts of power playing across thirteen speakers. Navigation is accessed via a color screen and Bluetooth connectivity allows for personal cell phone integration. The seats are upholstered in leather on both models with the HSE trimmed in Rhodium and the Supercharged in cherry wood.
The maximum towing weight for the vehicles with a braked trailer is 7,716 lbs. (1,653 lbs. unbraked) with a loadspace volume of 71 cubic feet. The vehicle seats five and has a ground clearance of 6.8 inches (8.9 inches off-road) and can esily ford water to a depth of 27.6 inches.
The 2007 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE is available in Chawton White, Stornoway Grey, Java Black Pearlescent, Giverny Green Mictallic, Zermatt Silver Metallic, Buckingham Blue, Rimini Red Micatallic, and Arctic Frost. (Alpaca seats and carpet are an option.) The Supercharged is available in all the same exterior finishes except Arctic Frost.
Available in two models, the HSE and Supercharged, both are powered by V8 engines: a 4.4-liter, V8 that makes 300-horsepower, and a 4.2-liter, supercharged V8 which develops 390-horsepower.
The muscular style that defines the Sport is evident in the strong lines of this vehicle’s shoulders. And, while the Sport does still have the tell-tale Land Rover clamshell hood as well as the classic floating roof, the Sport defines itself with its unique rear spoiler as well as the cleverly styled wheel arches. Another standard feature in the Sport HSE is the 19-inch alloy wheels. The body of the Range Rover Sport is made of durable aluminum for safety as well as decreased weight. One of the more driver-friendly features of the all-terrain Sport is that it comes standard with heated mirrors. This feature also extends to the rear window.
The Range Rover Sport offers a rich interior complemented by leather seats and a fine oak trim that enhances the interior doors, dash and console; which, by the way, includes a mini-fridge for those individuals who prefer those on-the-go drinks to be nice and cold. The driver will feel like a pilot in the air while driving this vehicle since the instrumentation panel as well as the driver’s seat are all positioned in a similar manner. The music lover will be pleased about the premium sound system with Bose technology while others may appreciate a Bluetooth capable, integrated phone system. The Sport Supercharged model also features a high tech navigation system complete with GPS technology as well as a 2 screen entertainment system in the rear. This way, the driver can keep the kids occupied while mapping out the route to the theme park.
Although the 2008 Land Rover Range Rover Sport looks nice and offers lots of amenities, many individuals do not feel that it is worth the purchase price or the fuel bill. Competitors, like Mercedes, Lexus and BMW are developing luxury SUV’s with similar options that are selling for thousands less while also offering the consumer a higher mpg rating.
SUV designed by Land Rover to have top-notch road performance on and off the road. A luxury ride all the way, it compares to the American made Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade in luxury, and the legendary Jeep in off road capability. Foreign competition includes the Acura MDX, BMW X6, Infiniti FX, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Lexus GX 470.
The 2009 Sport has not changed much in looks from the previous year.
The Sport has a choice of two engines, based on trim. The HSE comes with a 4.4 liter, 300 horsepower gasoline powered V8 with 315 pound feet of torque. The Supercharged comes with a 4.2 liter 390 horsepower gasoline powered V8 with 410 pound feet of torque. Either is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.
The Sport is purely a four-wheel drive vehicle with a two-speed differential. It has Land Rover’s Terrain Response System, which automatically sets the four-wheel drive performance to whatever types of terrain it crosses.
At 12 miles per gallon city and 18 miles per gallon highway, fuel efficiency is pretty poor for its class. Acceleration is also not very good. On the other hand, towing and hauling are above average, with almost 8,000 pounds maximum towing capacity and 1,300 pounds maximum payload. Cargo bed length is also good, at almost six feet, and warranty length is somewhat better than average.
The Range Rover Sport also ranks below class average in ride quality, noise, interior design quality and rear seat room. It got better than average ratings in handling and front seat roominess. Apparently there is a trade off between rear seat room and cargo room.
The only two trims are HSE and Supercharged. Aside from the differences in the motors, the Supercharged has better brakes, bigger tires and some nice added bells and whistles standard. For a price, you can get pretty much the same features on the HSE that you can get on the Supercharged.
NHTSA crash test ratings are not available for either 2008 or 2009 for the Ranger Rover Sport. Typically such vehicles do well except, perhaps, getting poor or mediocre rollover ratings. The Sport has Child Safety Locks, Anti-theft system, antilock brakes, load leveling system, electronic braking control, traction control, vehicle stability control system and airbags all around. Even the electronic parking aid is standard.
Base price for the 2009 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is $58,375. That’s for the HSE, of course. Base on the Supercharged is a whopping $71,825. Overall, the Range Rover Sport seems to fall a little short as a highway vehicle in its successful bid to remain off road ready. But if you primarily want an off road vehicle, it might be just the ticket.
The English based maker first introduced American buyers to the Range Rover in 1970, and it wasn’t until 2005 that the Land Rover Range Rover Sport made its way onto sales lots. The Range Rover Sport is a smaller version of the Range Rover and shares the same platform as the Discovery. The 5-passenger Range Rover Sport has become one of Land Rover’s top selling vehicles in the years since its inception. Since 2005, the Range Rover Sport has been available with four different engine levels: the Jaguar AJ V8, a supercharged AJ V8, a turbo diesel V8, and a turbo diesel V6. The horsepower ranges from 295 to a whopping 410. Buyers were thrilled with the options in the beginning, but since fuel prices have been on the rise, some are opting for more efficient SUVs.
Recently, Greenpeace disrupted production of the Range Rover Sport because of poor emission ratings and its part in global warming. News outlets jumped on the story and spread the word about Land Rover’s failure to create vehicles that take less of a toll on the environment. Also, Greenpeace used the poor fuel economy as a reason for the protest, and with only around 14 MPG, the organization seemed to be speaking for the nation as a whole.
Originally, the Range Rover Sport was called the Range Stormer in its concept stage. Though the Stormer was far from the current Range Rover Sport, the exterior design hinted at what was to come with the Sport. Many visitors to auto shows that featured the vehicle were excited that Land Rover was going to release a contemporary model, but quickly had their hopes dashed when the Range Rover Sport made it onto sales lots. The mid-size SUV fits in perfectly with Land Rover’s lineup. However, reviewers are quick to point out that the Range Rover Sport is due for a makeover sometime soon. The vehicle has been featured on several television shows, including a British action program called Top Gear. One of the most impressive features that critics have pointed out for years is the adaptability of the Range Rover Sport. Apparently, the Sport can drive through up to almost 28-inches of water without flooding the engine. For this reason, many branches of the military in foreign countries choose to use the Range Rover Sport in missions.
Supercharged ($92,750) models. The HSE has a 4.4 liter V8 with an automatic transmission with six speeds, all-wheel drive, and an electronic system for traction control. The Supercharged has a 4.2 liter V8 with the same transmission, drive system, and traction control. Additional monitoring systems include those addressing terrain response and tire pressure. Occupants are shielded by nine airbags and the Range Rover is outfitted with all-wheel brakes rated for any terrain and incorporating anti-locking technology.
The standard sound system features a Harman Kardon unit (710 watts) playing across fourteen speakers. The navigation system is accessed via a touch screen that includes a camera providing a rear view of the vehicle as well as Bluetooth connectivity for personal cell phone integration. The HSE has seats faced in leather and the center console, doors, and fascia are trimmed in American Cherry.
The 2007 Land Rover Range Rover can comfortably carry five. The vehicle has a gound clearance of 8.7 (11 inches off-road) and a wading depth of 27.6 inches. Maximum towing weight with a braked trailer is 7,716 lbs. (unbraked 1,653 lbs.) The maximum loadspace volume is 74.2 cubic feet.
There are two engine options, a 4.4-liter, 305 hp V8 on the HSE ($77,950) and a 4.2-liter, 400 hp V8 on the Supercharged ($93,600), both with four wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. While largely a carry-over from 2007, the 2008 Range Rover is more refined than its predecessor and should prove popular with Land Rover enthusiasts.
Both models are equipped with a comprehensive array of nine airbags in all the key positions. There’s a system for monitoring tire pressure, keyless entry tied to a security system, automatic headlights (Bi-Xenon) equipped with power washers, and an adaptive system for the front lighting (on the Luxury Interior Package on the HSE and standard on the Supercharged.)
In terms of convenience and comfort features, Land Rover is in a class by itself. Both models have climate control that is automatic over three zones, front powered seats with the driver’s adjustable to fourteen levels (from the Luxury Package on the HSE and up), and a one-touch sunroof. The HSE is trimmed in American Cherry Wood with an option for Burled Walnut. The Supercharged has Brand Black Lacquer Wood but can be outfitted with either the cherry or walnut. The front seats in the HSE Luxury are cooled, which is a standard feature on the Supercharged.
Both are equipped with a Harman/Kardon LOGIC7 710-watt audio unit playing over fourteen speakers. An input jack for audio devices is included as is SIRIUS Satellite Radio. The CD changer with a capacity for six discs sits in the glove box. In the high-tech feature department you’ll get an advanced navigation system with a touchscreen, telephone integration via Bluetooth, and a camera for rearview and parking assist. Both models can be outfitted with an entertainment system to the rear and Satellite Digital Audio Receiver Service is standard.
The 2008 Land Rover Range Rover may make you feel like you can hit the African savannas on safari, but if that’s the case, it’ll be the smoothest “roughing it” experience you’ve ever had. Smooth driving, smooth handling, and beautifully appointed, the Range Rover is in a class by itself.
Land Rover Range Rover offers you the ultimate vehicle for style, dependability, toughness and thrills. This is a large vehicle that eats terrain up like candy and it doesn’t exactly care about being highly fuel efficient. It delivers a modest 12/18 mpg city/highway, nearly equal to the Jeep Commander, and makes no apologies for it. It seats five in very comfortable style and is covered by a basic warranty that is good for 48 months or 50,000 miles.
The Range Rover underwent an extensive redesign in 2007. The 2009 model has of course been debugged and honed to incorporate a vast array of pleasing attributes. One of the most notable of these is the new Range Rover Terrain Response system that makes offroad scenarios able to be handled with more ease and confidence than ever before.
The 2009 Range Rover by Land Rover is the epitome of luxurious sport utility vehicles. The cabin has a European flavor and the entire vehicle has been comprehensively designed with safety and performance equally in mind first. This new roving monster of luxury is more quiet and easier to operate than any of its predecessors. A refined AC system is included for 2009 as well as enhanced seating and extra efforts spent in the noise reduction department. It follows the lead of world-class yachts offering your gorgeous real wood trim and genuine rich leather. Inside the spacious and safe cabin, you will feel like you are home.
When you are at the helm of the new 2009 Range Rover, you will feel empowered to say the least. Its smooth power is evident without having to show off. Whether you opt for the HSE trim that is powered by a 4.4L 305hp V8 or the Supercharged with a 4.2L 400hp V8, you’re going to know that your Rover can handle whatever gets thrown at you in terms of terrain. It is a good feeling, especially in northern climates that leave many motorists stranded in cold ditches.
Either engine will be accompanied by a powerful 6-speed automatic transmission and all-time four wheel drive. There a 2-speed transfer case that features an electronic “Torsen” central differential. Also, both trims come stock with electronic traction and stability control systems, 4-wheel ABS braking and the aforementioned Land Rover Terrain Response system.
In a nutshell, the 2009 Land Rover Range Rover is the ultimate luxury SUV. Either trim selected will provide you the absolute best of the best of features, both standard and optional. There really isn’t another vehicle on the planet that can touch it. It’s the optimal driving machine. It’s a home on wheels. It’s a Land Rover Range Rover and it means serious business.
Since its initial introduction of the first prototype in 1958, the Land Rover Range Rover was designed strictly with utility in mind. Although there were always internal company pressures applied to make the vehicles more aesthetically pleasing, Range Rovers kept grounded to their own very distinct style and work-based features and specifications. The utilitarianism of these trend-setting classic SUVs proved to be very successful. The Range Rover remained in production for over 25 years, finally coming to an end in 1996, but only to make room for the improved P38 Range Rover.
The viability of the Range Rover project was finally accepted in the middle of the 1960s. In 1966 the development of an “Interim Station Wagon” was initiated by Land Rover. Land Rover was feeling the pressures of declining military orders and needed to come up with a money source to remain in business. They purchased the rights to use the original 3.5L V8 engines and inserted them into a 5-seat station wagon-style vehicle with P6 comfort standards.
Because the gearbox on the standard Land Rover could not accommodate the strength of the V8, Land Rover designed a new, high-low gearbox for the Range Rover. A locking centralized differential was installed to provide 4WD capabilities. Leaf springs were replaced with long traveling vertical coil spring systems and in July of 1967, the first Range Rover prototype was complete. About the only elements that were common to the original Land Rovers were the drum brakes and the transmissions. A second prototype was designed to compare the differences in performance provided by disc brakes and a Boge Hydromat leveling unit.
To keep costs of production to a minimum, a 2-door body style was chosen. The new Rover needed some style added. It greatly resembled a field vehicle suitable only for military purposes. Two designers, Spen King and Gordon Bashford, brainstormed the design standards that would be implemented for both the interior and the exterior of the Range Rover and prototype 3 was born. Prototypes 4, 5, and 6 were soon to follow. They provided models that would be tested, retested and filmed for further research and design modifications. A final prototype, 100-7, was created to isolate any remaining problems associated with full production.
Official production of the Range Rover was begun in 1969. Initially, there were 25 vehicles created, all lacking rear seating and trim. Another batch of 20 was produced for the official press launch in June of 1970. By 1972, production was flowing at 100 every week and by 1975, production stood at 250 Rovers per week.
The public was very pleased with the Range Rover and demand exceeded all projections. Everyone from the police to land owners to horse farmers to family men were waiting for the delivery of their very own Range Rovers. These utility-tough vehicles topped out their speed at 100 miles per hour and could thrive in terrain where the vast majority of vehicles feared to touch their tires to.
Demand remained consistently impressive and for the next 20 years plus, Range Rovers underwent constant redefining and improving. The four-door model emerged in 1972 and quickly became the most popular seller. ABS braking, electronic air suspension and electronic traction control were all first seen in Range Rovers. The vehicles always maintained their utilitarian design profile and the Range Rover is still the only vehicle ever to be classified as a work of art by the Louvre.
The Land Rover Range Rover Classic will always be a favorite of many offroad enthusiasts and people worldwide continue to relish every second spent cruising the backroads, and the city streets, in theirs. Range Rovers did more than stand the test of time; they helped to define time itself.
V8 SE for $48,950 (4.4-liter, 300 horsepower), and a V8 HSE for $53,950 (4.4-liter, 300 horsepower). All models get an estimated fuel consumption of 14 mpg city and 19 highway with the standard automatic transmission with six speeds and CommandShift. Permanent 4WD with a system for traction control compliments other onboard elements like terrain response, air suspension, and all-wheel brakes.
Standard seating capacity on the V6 SE is five; seven on the V8 SE and HSE. Seats are leather with the second row a 65/35 split in the V6SE and a 35/30/35 on the other models. Drivers enjoy eight levels of adjustment with passengers being afford six. The audio system on the SE models is a 240-watt Harman Kardon unit playing over nine speakers and using a changer in the dash holding six discs. The HSE jumps to a 550-watt unit playing to thirteen speakers.
Maximum payload capacity on the 2007 Land Rover LR3 ranges from 1,325 to 1,806 with maximum trailer weight (with brakes) at 7,700 lbs. (without brakes 1,650.) Occupants are protected by an array of six airbags including those covering the driver and passenger as well as bags in the curtain position for each row of seating. Doors on the LR3 have integrated beams to absorb impact and crumple zones are present to the front and rear.

A Luxury Options Package is available for the HSE that includes adaptive headlights, upgraded leather upholstery and all the features found in the Cold Climate Options package.
Both models are powered by a 4.4-liter V8 that is capable of 300 horsepower. The driver controls sending the power through a six-speed automatic transmission to an advanced 4 wheel drive system by simply changing the rotary dial to 1 of 5 settings - general, snow/grass/gravel, mud and ruts, sand, and rock craw- that will optimize handling and power to accommodate the current driving conditions. The LR3 also features an independent suspension that enables it to utilize electronically controlled air springs that automatically adapt to just about any terrain. When properly equipped, this SUV s very capable of towing a very hefty 7,700 pounds.
Combining a rugged exterior, powerful engine, crisp handling, true off road capabilities and a full array of luxury features, the 2008 Land Rover LR3 has created a uniquely designed mid size SUV. Crisp handling and its easy to maneuver size help this Land Rover really shine for every day use or more adventurous treks.
