In 2004, the LR3 was introduced by Ford Motor Company, which owned Land Rover at the time. The vehicle, which was available as a 2005 model year vehicle, was a complete redesign of the Discovery Series II, which had been around since 1998. None of the same components were even used in making the LR3.
Some of the physical features of the new vehicle resemble the Discovery Series II, but overall it’s a completely new vehicle. This change was brought about because the company’s market share for SUVs in this price range was dropping. Consumers were going for the more sophisticated and sporty 4 x 4 models from Toyota, BMW and others.
The LR3 is so named to avoid the negative connotations of the Discovery series and because U.S. marketing gurus suggested that Americans are attracted to the alphanumeric combination. This new vehicle seats 7 adults comfortably. It is the ultimate in off-road vehicles, having reached summits that no other vehicle could before it.
It has a strong 300 horsepower, V-8 engine with 315 pounds of torque. There was also a 6-cylinder model available in 2006 and 2007, but it is no longer being offered. The interior of the vehicle is wonderfully appointed with everything you could ask for in a vehicle. The ergonomics are just perfect.
This vehicle has a Terrain Response system, so at the turn of a knob you can instruct the LR3 on what type of terrain it will experience next. It self adjusts to ensure a great ride for driver and passengers in any condition. It is programmed to handle ruts, rocks, sand, gravel, snow, mud and grass. This feature alone has won the LR3 awards and lots of excitement.
Many Range Rover truck owners praise it because it offers a nice combination of durability and dependability. That is where comes in - the free locator service that specializes in finding exactly the part you need to make either your vehicle or the vehicle of a customer whole again. We are so accustomed to talk about Land Rovers as typical all-wheel driven commuters that a Land Rover running on a front-wheel drivetrain sounds like a real novelty. It has never happened before for the brand but under the new owner, we will soon see an LRX Compact SUV coupe which is slated to debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.Hitting the production floor early next year, Land Rover will first unveil an AWD version of the LRX while the novelty (FWD) shall hit markets sometime later. Land Rover is keen to reduce fleet CO2 emissions and the front-wheel driven LRX will look to do that for the brand. As far as the AWD version is concerned, it will get a 185 bhp rendering 2.2 liter diesel engine which will be mated to a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.
The Land Rover LR3 is the 3rd generation model of the Discovery series of sport utility vehicles. Prices for the LR3 start at $49,300, making it the least expensive in the Land Rover line. Land Rover celebrates its 60th birthday in 2008 and has one of the oldest lines of SUVs on the market.

Launched in 1989 the Land Rover Discovery was originally designed to bridge the gap between the utilitarian Defender and premium Range Rover models, offering a true off-road vehicle that could carry five people in comfort.
The Discovery or ‘Disco’ as some owners affectionately call them has been a phenomenal success in the 142 markets around the world in which it is sold and is just as common in the city as the farmyard. With over 50 years experience as the world’s only dedicated 4×4 manufacturer Land Rover has achieved enviable brand loyalty with many owners choosing to purchase another Discovery or Land Rover model.
There are any number of remote locales you’d expect to see a Land Rover Defender. Crossing the desert. Traversing a battlefield. Climbing a mountain. Strolling through a vineyard? Okay, sure… why not. But this particular Defender isn’t just taking the weekend off. This is where it belongs. Or at least that’s what Italian customizer Fuoriserie Torino would have you believe.
Now we’ve seen plenty a Land Rover with teak panels. Like Startech’s Defender Yachting Edition, or Land Rover’s own Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition. But those put the nautical-themed veneers on the inside. Fuoriserie puts ‘em on the outside where you’d expect to find diamond-plated aluminum brush guards.
America, especially those for safety go WELL beyond the usual airbag/seat belt variety. In fact, in America vehicles not only have to provide these standard features but the car also has to be designed with the assumption that the driver and/or passenger are not going to use them. The designer of the Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish, Ian McCallum, explains that unbelted passengers and pedestrian legislation prevent vehicles ranging from the bull-nosed Defender to the diminutive Hyundai i10 from ever coming to the States.
Developed in collaboration with JLR South Africa, this Defender 110 – a long-wheelbase model with an extended pickup bed (fitted with extra seating) instead of an extra set of doors – has had its diesel engine replaced with a lithium-ion battery pack mated to an unspecified motor capable of propelling the Defender over approximately three times the usual “game drive” (read: hunting expedition) on a single charge. All this without emitting a single local gram of carbon and maintaining silent operation that will bring its occupants closer to the game without spooking them off.
For years Land Rover has represented the epitome of off-roading capabilities. The heavy, boxy stanced juggernaut has conquered every continent, taken passengers on safari and is still used by peace keeping and aid organizations in the completion of their duties. Along with Jeep it is perhaps the most recognizable name in production 4×4 vehicles. This year the Land Rover Defender turns 60. While it is only marginally different than previous Defenders, it is still a rugged piece of machinary. But unfortunately for North America it will not be sold here. Now before I get more “you think every piece of Euro-crap is good” emails, let me explain why this is significant.
UK-only special edition Defender 90 they’re calling the SVX. (No, it doesn’t look like a Subaru.) The SVX is a 200-vehicle limited edition (140 convertibles, 60 hardtops) that also happens to be the swankiest version of the short-wheelbase Defender yet. As evidence of this, note the bright metallic grille surround, clear lamps, silver roll cage and spiffy wheels. Inside, Recaros, an upgraded stereo (iPod cradle, subwoofer, etc.), Garmin navi, and alloy shift knobs continue the glitzification. Not to worry, though. Just because this Defender’s been to the haberdashery for some new duds and accessories doesn’t mean it’s any less capable. Like its more casually-attired kin, if the going gets rough (literally), it’s good to go.
