In 2004, the LR3 was introduced by Ford Motor Company, which owned Land Rover at the time. The vehicle, which was available as a 2005 model year vehicle, was a complete redesign of the Discovery Series II, which had been around since 1998. None of the same components were even used in making the LR3.

Some of the physical features of the new vehicle resemble the Discovery Series II, but overall it’s a completely new vehicle. This change was brought about because the company’s market share for SUVs in this price range was dropping. Consumers were going for the more sophisticated and sporty 4 x 4 models from Toyota, BMW and others.

The LR3 is so named to avoid the negative connotations of the Discovery series and because U.S. marketing gurus suggested that Americans are attracted to the alphanumeric combination. This new vehicle seats 7 adults comfortably. It is the ultimate in off-road vehicles, having reached summits that no other vehicle could before it.

It has a strong 300 horsepower, V-8 engine with 315 pounds of torque. There was also a 6-cylinder model available in 2006 and 2007, but it is no longer being offered. The interior of the vehicle is wonderfully appointed with everything you could ask for in a vehicle. The ergonomics are just perfect.

This vehicle has a Terrain Response system, so at the turn of a knob you can instruct the LR3 on what type of terrain it will experience next. It self adjusts to ensure a great ride for driver and passengers in any condition. It is programmed to handle ruts, rocks, sand, gravel, snow, mud and grass. This feature alone has won the LR3 awards and lots of excitement.

We are so accustomed to talk about Land Rovers as typical all-wheel driven commuters that a Land Rover running on a front-wheel drivetrain sounds like a real novelty. It has never happened before for the brand but under the new owner, we will soon see an LRX Compact SUV coupe which is slated to debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.Hitting the production floor early next year, Land Rover will first unveil an AWD version of the LRX while the novelty (FWD) shall hit markets sometime later. Land Rover is keen to reduce fleet CO2 emissions and the front-wheel driven LRX will look to do that for the brand. As far as the AWD version is concerned, it will get a 185 bhp rendering 2.2 liter diesel engine which will be mated to a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

The Land Rover LR3 is the 3rd generation model of the Discovery series of sport utility vehicles. Prices for the LR3 start at $49,300, making it the least expensive in the Land Rover line. Land Rover celebrates its 60th birthday in 2008 and has one of the oldest lines of SUVs on the market.

Launched in 1989 the Land Rover Discovery was originally designed to bridge the gap between the utilitarian Defender and premium Range Rover models, offering a true off-road vehicle that could carry five people in comfort.

The Discovery or ‘Disco’ as some owners affectionately call them has been a phenomenal success in the 142 markets around the world in which it is sold and is just as common in the city as the farmyard. With over 50 years experience as the world’s only dedicated 4×4 manufacturer Land Rover has achieved enviable brand loyalty with many owners choosing to purchase another Discovery or Land Rover model.

UK-only special edition Defender 90 they’re calling the SVX. (No, it doesn’t look like a Subaru.) The SVX is a 200-vehicle limited edition (140 convertibles, 60 hardtops) that also happens to be the swankiest version of the short-wheelbase Defender yet. As evidence of this, note the bright metallic grille surround, clear lamps, silver roll cage and spiffy wheels. Inside, Recaros, an upgraded stereo (iPod cradle, subwoofer, etc.), Garmin navi, and alloy shift knobs continue the glitzification. Not to worry, though. Just because this Defender’s been to the haberdashery for some new duds and accessories doesn’t mean it’s any less capable. Like its more casually-attired kin, if the going gets rough (literally), it’s good to go.

When Land Rover expanded its lineup in 1990, the Defender name was chosen for a model line that would evolve into a luxury “sport-ute” brand. The 4×4 purists liked the 2007 remodeling that retained the iconic “moving fortress” look instead of yielding to a new-age design. The Defender is sold in three wheelbase lengths, and its brawny ladder-frame chassis carries five different body styles. The body styles range from the Defender 90 pickup and 110 station wagon to the 130 double cab model. Three trim levels are offered—Base, County and XS—with each offering something different to suit an owner’s particular needs. The firm has morphed the once barebones Land Rover Defender into a hard worker that at least tries to coddle its passengers, a generally successful process that buyers seem to appreciate.

The LRX concept has been around for a couple of years, making its first appearance in 2008, but finally announced has confirmed the LRX concept will begin production towards the end of 2010.

“The new vehicle will be a natural extension to the Range Rover line-up,” says Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s design chief. “It will be true to the concept and have many recognizable Range Rover design cues.”

Managing Director Phil Popham believes the LRX will expand appeal relevance of the Land Rover brand all around the world. How so? By creating a sense of excitement and drama with its dramatic silhouette.

“There is a taxation benefit which will be rolled over to our customers,” Carl-Peter Forster, chief executive and managing director for the Tata Motors group, was quoted as saying in the Wall Street Journal’s Friday edition. “But setting up an assembly plant shows Jaguar Land Rover is increasingly becoming a part of India. It shows we are more rooted, more grounded in the Indian market and we have a larger commitment than just selling a few cars.”

Investors have had their eyes on the Tata purchase of such a massive global brand for the last three years, holding out high hopes for the luxury names in Tata’s portfolio of passenger cars. The Jaguar Land Rover deal essentially turned Tata into a global automaker. It hopes to launch its version of the low cost mini-city car, Nano, in markets outside of India next year.
